GT panel on rear wagon color?

Postby 67shovel » Thu Sep 11, 2014 5:01 pm

Putting my 73 GT Vega wagon back together and had a paint question. I got the car with original white paint and the black hood stripe along with a black panel on the rear lift gate.
Question is: did all the 73 GT wagons rear panels have the black insert between the tail lights reguardless of color that was on the hood stripe? In other words, if my wagon came factory red with a white hood stripe would the rear lift gate have a white panel or a black panel? I'm painting an orange hood strip on it and a black rear panel simalar to what the big block Camaros and Chevelles had and friends are suggesting that it should be orange in back.
Thanks,
Roger

I should have commented on this months ago. Sorry, don't look at this section too often.

I am nearly certain that the Kammback hatch was the solid color of the car with no stripe from the factory, but it popular for the user to put a horizontal stripe the same color as the GT stripe to break up the solid.

The hatchback; however, had the GT stripe on the hatch (not the roof).

All the wagons I have seen with factory paint were body color only on the tailgate.

Humm. I've got one that I thought was factory paint that has a black lower panel with a 1\4" surrounding stripe. Maybe it was a dealer add on or a custom deal.
Thank you for your replys,

After serching the net I have to agree. I didn't see any rear hatchs with a stripe on them.

I looked for a brochure with a picture of the rear of an early GT wagon but have not found one.

Roger,
The color of the horizontal stripe on the 71-73 Kammback GT tailgate was the same color as what was used on the hood. The stripes were an-add on option for the Hatcback and Kammback GT. The 74-76 Kammback GT with the optional stripes, used the same tailgate stripe as the 71-73 but was cut out around the newly 74 relocated license frame.

COS2482
Thank you very much. I was believing that mine was a dealer add on. It was a decal and I painted it back on there because I liked the way it looked. I'm glad to know that it was available for the GT wagons as I like to build these to look like they did. I did screw up though as I'm going to paint the hood stripe in orange on a white car and I did the rear panel in black like the big block muscle cars had. Going with orange tooth seat iinserts because I always liked the look of the 69 Camaro pace car.
thanks again,
Roger
