Lurker joins

Postby Greybeard » Wed Dec 10, 2014 4:57 am

I've been a Vega fan since Feb. '72 when a carload of us drove down to the Winter Nationals from Seattle. At that time I'd been racing for over 10 years with various sbc powered cars. After watching Grumpy put away the Pro Stock field, I was hooked. My first Vega was an orange '72 GT that I built for a daily driver. 215" Buick/T10. It was a great little car, but life happened in Seattle for a lot of us in at that time and I had to let it go.
After getting back on my feet, I bought a new '75 Cosworth at a deep Discount from a dealer who didn't think much of a Vega in general, or the expensive Cosworth in particular. I'd thought several times about re powering it, but it drove and ran so well, it would have been a shame to loose the balance it had. Life interfered again when my childhood sweetheart and wife of 14 years passed. Huge doctor bills meant a lot of things went away, and my life started over.
My new life had a lot of cars in it, but no Vega until '13 when a friend turned me on to a done car. after a lengthy negotiation, I, once again owned a Vega. Most of my friends are Street Rod guys, and don't understand (it's an age thing maybe). I've got a few changes to make before I'll be able to leave it alone, but I'm very happy to once again be an owner.
I look forward to sharing with the members here, as well as availing myself of the vast pool of knowledge.
Mike

Nice Vega. I always liked that bodystyle. Looks like my second gen Camaro (but I don't have the split bumper).

I like that Cowl Induction hood too. I have a L-88 hood on my Monza...

Thanks for the wecome!
I'd have had more pics but the ones I have are huge, and I couldn't crop them enough to fit except for that one. I will be doing more later when I get it out of the shop. The engine is a 350 with great pieces, but came to me with a wiped cam and cooked rings. Installing a custom grind from comp in hydraulic roller, and new rings. I'll install thermostat controlled fan switch to prevent a serious overheat I think they did to it before. It has a built 350 TH with 3000 stall converter. I'm a 4 gear guy so that will go. I've got to at least get rid of the "halo" bars in the cage as the one is right next to my temple. Prolly get rid of the whole cage. Not so sure yet as I love how solid the car feels. Although it's connected underneath, I'm sure the cage is adding to that. I've been hoarding a Z28 crossram that may make it in there someday.

Welcome! What a great looking, clean car you have! I like that it still uses the original wheel wells (no tubbing) and shows how good these cars can look with just minimal modifications.

Found some photos sent to me from the previous owner. I hope they are ok.
Another bit of backstory. In the fall of '66 I tried to get a '67 Z28. Production was short, and the dealers alotted them were few. I finally secured one from Alan Green Chevrolet in Seattle. It was a "delete" car. It had some damage in the nose from a couple salesmen exceeding their talent and the original purchaser backed out. The paint on the repair was horrid, so I stripped it, and repainted the car in silver ( caddy Firemist) with black stripes. That car was the C Stock, NHRA national record holder for a short time, and always a stock eliminator threat where ever it ran. When I saw this Vega, I was hooked. It stopped all thoughts of doing my own. I'll put my own stamp on it of course, but the silver and black stays.
