I appreciate the comments.
I'll try another pic I found. Taken too close to the car, and huge picture as well, but a different look.

I spent a few hours today looking for a Muncie m21 trans. Hopefully, by spring, I'll have a Hurst shifter in there. I'm a dyed in the wool 4 gear guy. The tranny in the car works great, full auto or full manual. I can tell by the quick rev that it has a small diameter convertor, supposedly 3000 rpm. I hate to remove good stuff but it's just not me.
I've layed awake at night worrying over the roll bar. It's a nice job of welding, has a definite "pro street" look, but I can't deal with the bar running just an inch or two by my temple. I'm 6'3" and just can't slouch far enough to get away from it. So I've decided to take it all out and rely on the connectors underneath to keep it stiff. I hope they do as this sucker feels so solid right now.
I sure have been made to feel welcome here. I worried unnesessarily that my buying a done car ( they are never done) as to building my own may have raised a level of pique in members who have built the many absolutely beautiful cars that I've seen on this site. I'm '71 years young and many of the street rodders I hang with look down their noses at someone buying a "done car". So much of this car exceeded my expectations, and had the look and parts I would have used. And the start of my last build was slipping toward "never happen".
Thanks for the kind welcome, and may you and yours enjoy the Holidays.
Mike

I bought a "done" Vega 26 years ago and have never regretted it. I've been able to DRIVE it while changing things to make it "mine".

By the way, I like that Corvair, too! Nice job!

Chuck,
Thanks. The Corvair build took years. I called it "the menopause express". To escape the tension in the house, one night I picked up a sawsall and cut that sucker to pieces. The Missus took a big wad of money and left me. I kept the 'Vair and made a neat little car. Didn't plan on finishing it really. It was sort of a conversation piece in the back of the shop, and isnt well detailed. It's terribly quick. It leaves the line on those tires with the wheels up.

Hoffbug,
I saw someone had posted on this thread, looked over and saw the name, and said "Hey, I know that guy!". Yessir, it's been a while. I see you are going to use a 215". They are great little engines, make all the right sounds, get good economy, and should be fun in your Vega/Astre. I did hydros for a time, and the 225" class was dominated with the Buick version, and I put one in a '72 GT. It was a lot of fun, and when I think of the cars I wish I still had, it makes the list. The competition is pretty stout to make that list. I haven't seen much hop up stuff recently, but there were both Edelbrock and Offy twin deuce intakes. I'm sure one can get a cam ground if you wanted one. We saw 318 hp on the Dyno with a motor for the APBA World record holder.

beautiful car, and while i wont give you flack for buying a done car your post about taking the cage out kind of made me wonder if you couldn't just take the bars that bug you out and leave the rest? you must have really fallen in love with it to buy it even though it has a cage and an auto and you want no cage and a stick shift. anyways enough of that I hope you enjoy your new toy... and welcome to the site!

ps.
I'm pretty sure that if i still wanna play with cars and have the funds at your age I will be buying "done" cars too
