Been working on the bumpers a bit trying to decide to get them refinished or not.Pretty good shape except for some corrosion under the bumper guard.Earlier removed bracing, springs.and guards and made new mounting brackets now looking at the shells.Tried some corrosion remover to see what they looked like
Image
Used stainless wire brush and Phix until the area was some what shiny
Image
Going to give it a temp. fix for now with some of the 'chrome' paint with a swab
Image
puddle it on the corroded area, let dry over night and kept repeating
Image
Really not that bad if can save a lot $$ in refinishing them
Image
sourced some 2" moulding here http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Black-Side-Bo ... xy4dNSr4ri They also have chrome but not sure if it will wrap around the bumper ends
Image
This stuff wraps nicely on the 2" wide bolt mounting area

Broke out the orbital buffer and some Wizards product for muscle work out this week end

Didn't take all the orange peal or fine scratch completely off but came close. After fine sanding with 3000 Grt polished my reasonably priced Tamco http://www.tamcopaint.com/ single stage urethane with Wizards Mystic and foam pad starting from the roof

My first time color sanding and buffing but this paint in a garage job like mine is not too bad

dug up the chrome that I had pre-marked and cleaned it and reinstalled

Getting rear bumper ready to install test fitted once again and fits fine with the fabbed brackets. While ago removed the inner braces and springs but using the alum outer shell
Image
going to try some of this GM truck black 2" moulding http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Black-Side-Bo ... xy4dNSr4ri for the center band
Image
Image
brought to the other side and trimmed to length. This band fits the bump perfect and is not as blocky looking as the factory guard.Scuffed and cleaned for the adhesive tape on the moulding
Image
Image
Sticking at one end worked around pulling tape backing
Image
Image
added some screws from behind especially where the 90 deg corners are for good measure
Image
Ordered button head bolts for the bottom of the bumper mount for a factory finish look and also put the bumper bolts in the holes to fill them
Image
Image
Image
Ready to install.Curious to see how much it now weighs complete with brackets
Image
Splurged some again and got all new locks and GM keys from here Strattec/OEM 607893 + 608307 + 700919 http://www.ebay.com/itm/351704291465?rmvSB=true

I'm really liking the thinner profile body side moulding used instead of the thick bumper rubbers. Only someone who knows later H-bodies would even notice. Slick.

VB I too think that is looking nice, just the right amount of "subtle" I hope you ordered the "Button Heads" in stainless as the "Black Oxide" finish doesn't last if any exposure to the elements and even rubs off with moderate handling. About 1/2 the screws we use in the tools we build are already rubbed about half clean before delivery. It is too bad as I love the "Allen head" and stainless tube look with chrome. Harry

Going to put the bumper on as soon as kids get rolling out of bed to help.Occurred to me how 'factory oem' most of the car looks, even under the hood only the air filter and maybe intake seems after market.Vega is a great car IMO just needs a few factory upgrades.(And some welding here and there)
Those button head bolts I wanted were almost another 'gotch ya'.I used 7/16-14 bolts when building the brackets thinking no big deal when the time comes to go run for some button head bolts for the bottom but the local stores only carry 3/8 button heads.I then went to the Fastenal outlet we have and they do not show them in their catalogs either!Only with a search on Amazon did come up with some and only black so I clear coated them end put them on.

Now found some chrome ones here
http://www.eastcoastbolts.com/7-16-14-x ... allen.aspx for $5.00 ea yikes
You talked me into the chrome Harry ordered 2 rear and 4 front

Well that may seem Expensive but at that price it will likely still be the cheapest thing on your car and I think you will be very happy the next time you see another car with the tell tale signs of R :censored: T streaks down somebody else's ride from "Black Screws" You will Think D@mn I am glad Harry :pook: me about that! Here is another source for your bolts: http://gardner-westcott.com/product-cat ... ad-screws/ I didn't realize they are almost local, until I did this search for this post, I have seen there fasteners at area swap meets and they are PURDY Certainly High Quality look about them. Harry http://gardner-westcott.com/ And P.S. your car is looking Way Too Sweet Can't wait to see it when you are finished!

Found these coated thread cutting screws to be quite handy when putting on fuel lines and other stuff
Image
Image
bumper on now too
Image
also finished the front kick panels with speakers behind.Had to drill some extra mounting holes for attaching and fill some existing holes over the speakers with a couple of blind screws

You will need a lot more holes in those kick panels to let the sound from the speakers through. Rule of thumb is 50+% perforation. If you could find a pair of kicks from a non-A/C Vega, they would have grills already on them from the air vents.
Just an observation from almost 35+ years in car audio.

This is kinda my first iteration installed to see how they look and holes are up and viewed at an angle now don't even notice the holes in them so I can def enlarge them twice the size and/or add more.Just going slow as not to hack these nice kick panels, only ones I have. These are heavy magnet 3 way 6x9s and not the 4x6 or something and have them lower so between the exhaust and stereo can still talk to passengers.I may even do a run with the panels and with out for a comparison to see what is lost and adjust some.

VB I think you should open them up and create a wire frame and cover them with some speaker cloth to match or contrast [yellow?] the kick panels. with your apparent skill and patients level I can't wait to see the results! Here is one from a quick search for material: http://www.parts-express.com/cat/speake ... fabric/319 and the Yahoo search: https://ca.search.yahoo.com/search?p=Sp ... orcl_hpset Something here ought to catch your imagination/spirit! Just remembered back in the 80s we used to throw a big pair of home stereo speakers in the back of the Vega,as big as would fit with an extra equalizer amp up front what a sound that was!
Thought I lost a box with all the trim and headlight/marker stuff but found it in the shed rafters after so long, sweating on that one.Really blessed on the excellent condition most every thing still is.

Rear seat hardware also bagged up together in there and they need a little attention.

also wet sanded the rubber stoppers with 400 grt to get them back to factory gray color

nothing exciting but guess it makes a difference

Cleaning front seats before putting them back in.Ran out off Wizards Power Clean and tried some other cleaners and soaps but none worked the way I wanted so ordered more and this stuff just plain cleans great.

Cleaned and had all the plastic painted the correct interior white at a local body shop, although pricey, they match and look good
