Garage floor coatings

Postby 283vega » Sat Aug 18, 2018 10:15 am

I have gotten some high dollar $$$$ for the new garage floor coating. Its to much not in the budget. Any one with any ideas preferably from personal experience.
THECOST was $4000. for 650 sq ft that included hitting the floor with a industrial sander to give the product a surface to adhere to.

Brian,I have worked in a couple of shops [mould shops] with epoxy floors, and while it looked good when new, I wouldn't do it in my own shop. Here is why, all of your equipment will need a flat foot added, so that means welding a plate to each leg of each safety stand, your blast cabinet, parts washer, steel legged benches and cabinets, etc. and then a "soft*" surface under that, your floor jack should have "soft*" wheels [*urethane, phenolic or similar]. Then if you, correction when you drop something heavy and hard on your new coating, it will "JUMP" right off the concrete and it will not look as pretty as it used to! If your floor is in rough shape [pitting] this will be the cheapest repair, if cracked this will be temporary at best. Also the ones I encountered were Glass Smooth [there are additives for this but they will add cost] and I couldn't push $#!+ across the floor on the urethane wheeled carts to save my life! This is just my perspective on the "Epoxy coatings" I have encountered. If your garage has done the last of car [etc.] construction duty and you want a "Show-Place" for your toys, they have some gorgeous choices! Harry

I used a epoxy coating made by Rustoleum about 15 years ago or so and it has held up great. The main thing is to make sure the floor is clean and etched according to instruction. If you don't etch it or follow all the directions it will likely not hold up. There are probably better products on the market now, so just do your research. I did my floor for about $100 back then, a far cry from $6000..............

Polyaspartic coating is the high dollar stuff. epoxy is cheaper then acrylic. Anyone else?

Here is Rustoleum's new line of coatings. https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catal ... floor-kits
There is also the option of using something like RaceDeck, more expensive though. https://racedeck.com/

As I mentioned, my Rustoleum coating has held up great for at least 15 years now, maybe longer. The new stuff sounds even better, so it is worth a look.

i can honestly reccomend rustoleum

Do not skip the prep work, including the etching process.

Thats the difficult part. Iam looking at gel etching as to be the cleanest. Had I known that etching was need I would have painted the garage walls after the floor.

There is no problem with the walls, it's basically just water with a little muratic acid. You let it bubble for a little bit and rinse it off. It's hard to remember but I think I mixed in a bucket and poured it on. Make sure you wear gloves and glasses and follow directions.

So what did you use? I heard that the floor should be sandblasted first if you are going to use epoxy.

I used a clear modified acrylic topical coating by Concrete sealers usa TS 210 . Two thin coats no etching needed. I did etch the area in front on the garage door where the car sits. I have yet to move the car into that garage as I am setting up the work benches and wall cabinets etc. I like the look of the coated concrete and I like the fact that it did not cost a fortune. I will find out over time if this holds up. The product is a 2 part system that has a very short work time once applied to the concrete , but slow to set in the pan. Its main purpose is to stop the concrete from staining from oil spills and such.
