Minitubs and rear control arm relocation??

Postby LSnotchback » Fri Jan 18, 2019 4:31 am

Hello guys,

I am planning to minitub my 74 notchback to get little bit more room for decent 17” tires. Nothing wild, just 2”-3” each side.

What I have understood lover control arms needs to be relocated. Should I bay new tubular arms and just make new inboard mounting points or is universal 4 link kit better? I am swapping S-10 rear axle same time with new axle brackets.

I will use the car for slalom/road course / street. So no drag race systems.

The uppers and the lowers must both be relocated as well as the springs.
A lot of work for a 2” wider tire.

I was able to fit a 17"x8" wheel and a 245/40-17 tire inside the stock wheel well on a '73 Vega.

Here is Chuck's thread when he advertised his car for sale, good pictures to give you ideas.

Moving the lower control arms inward you will loose the ability to use a stock swaybar.

I would use a small web Ford 9 inch for a mini tub job, the stamped housing is better for relocating the upper control arm brackets and the 9 inch uses pressed on wheel bearings instead of C-clips.
GM rear end housings have a cast center with the tubes pressed in, it is harder to weld the upper control arm brackets to a casting.

Here are 2 mini tub projects using the stock 4 link suspension:

KZVEGA sectioned a bit more of the floor moving the whole spring pocket and control arm mount areas inwards as units

S10 rear end with Vega upper control arms in stock location, see how close they are to the cast center section.
