S10 5 lug axle question

Postby 71GTKammback » Wed May 29, 2019 5:09 pm

Have the S10 5 lug axles in my 7.5 monza posi rear end. I found that one axle is bent at the flange causing a wobble.

Bought a set of new yukon axles. 26 spline, correct length. Outer bearing surface correct size. Inner bearing surface too small. My existing axles measure out at abot 28mm. The yukons are at 22.

Went to a wrecking yard and got some replacement axles and they are too big at 31mm.

Aarrhghh!!! Any thoughts? I am tageting 82-93 S10 2wd axles.

What do you mean by "inner bearing surface"? Are you measuring the spline diameter? If I remember correctly, '82-'87 use a 26-spline axle, '88 and newer use a 28-spline. I can't give you the exact diameters, but the 28-spline is a larger diameter than the 26-spline.

Do the Yukon axles have the same spline outer diameter ?
Is the ā€œCā€ clip groove the same ?

Count your splines. Someone may have done some changes to that rear over the years

if you are saying the wheel/drum flange at the face is wobbling a friend just had one straightened that wasa out 1/16th of an inch by having the face machined i believe on a lathe runs perfectly true now he said. 1/16th doesnt sound like much but when you get out to the surface of the tire it is a signifigant wobble lol. good luck on the cure!

For the rear 5 lug axle swap you need
82-88 S10 2wd 26 spline axles

S10 rear axle data:
1982 to 1988 7.5"s used 26 spline. 1990 to 2003 7.625"s used 28 spline axles
1989 could have 26 or 28

I used 91..93 s10 pickup axles (7.5) new seals and bearings in my 79 monza....perfect fit...didn't even scrape backing plate.
Hope that helps.

Did you pull the S10 axles yourself ?
89 was the transition year so 90 and up would not fit in a Monza 7.5ā€ carrier.
When junkyard hunting look for a first gen S10 with the early grille then check the year.
axles changed mid 88, grille changed 91
