Glass Packs Revisited

For the past year I have been driving the Astre SJ straight off the headers. Around the neighborhood and to get gas once a month or so, not on the road or highways. The main reason I just couldn't settle on a Muffler choice, but that has all changed. I was at a cruise and in the distance I heard what I thought was the sweetest sound I have herd in many years. The car was a MGB with a glass pack. The guy couldn't tell me the brand since he had purchased the car with the glass pack. I looked under the little car and the muffler was red so I surmised it was a "Cherry Bomb" Glass pack.

The reason I mention this is because I associate Glass Packs with my youth and with my age I have become very nostalgic about things in general. This is all to say I have found the perfect muffler for the SJ. I know it's not throaty and all "Big Block" sounding but there that Glass Pack resides in my memory as the sweetest sound of them all.

Anyone, have a suggestion on a favorite Glass pack?

Phil,

I don't think I've had Cherry Bombs (and loud pipe tickets) since the '80s! Nowadays, I seem to be concerned about the fiberglass burning up. I've been using Magnaflow lately, with steel wool packing, and they do make 3" and 4" round mufflers as well as the ovals.

There are also different tones depending on the number of cylinders passing through the mufflers, my first new car was a '66 Corvair and duals on the flat 6 made a sound I can't duplicate today.

The Cherry Bomb Vortex sounds the same as the old standard glass pack , plus it may fit in the factory location on HBodys.

Alot of Cherry Bomb testing on YouTube.

I'm with you Phil, I remember everyone was into Thrush mufflers and Turbo mufflers back in the day but I all ways ran the good ole Glasspacks myself, mainly with full pipes.

I guess it's, "what goes around, comes around"....
I always liked the sound of a Glass Pack but then I got hooked on the metallic sound of Flowmasters which I don't care so much for nowadays. The deal is the ear is a pretty exacting instrument, not like the eye which can play tricks on you. The ear searches for definition. I learned this from music. Ya, a Thrush would be a good second choice, very distinctive. The ill named "Turbo" is just a collective of various sounds under one roof. I've been through probably ten sets of Turbos down through the years and none sounded like the other.

I should mention here the SJ is not ready for the highways, so it may be awhile before I fully commit to a Glass pack muffler.

I have a pair of 2.5" Pypes M80 glass packs with an H-pipe. They sound great, but the main reason I went with them is that they are 2.5" all the way through instead of necking down and restricting flow like the Cherry Bombs and even Magnaflow seem to do. They're also compact enough to fit under a Vega. Picture below (pardon my welds...)

Edit: Of course the picture link broke. Hopefully this works better:

Awww yes, the classic M80 sound,
I was listening to Flowmaster's take on the Glasspack design and they offer one which reduces the back popping or as they say eliminates it. I kinda want the throaty sound without the popping...well I do and I don't. My current exhaust pipe design follows the factory single pipe wrapping over the rear axle, 3" of course.

I really like you're stainless duals as well as you're Vega, great build!

I love glass packs as well. But also have a soft spot for the old soft body thrush mufflers. They didn't last long but had a great sound. They have a new one out called the rattler I put on my 73.Very aggressive and powerful sounding.

A friend of mine just had Magnaflow (stainless steel) on their 58 Chevy wagon and they sound great. This is on a 350.....

Drifting off topic here.
How long have you had that Craftsman ratchet? I have had mine almost fifty years.

Ha, good catch, LOL!, I have one of those too, it just won't die. I have had it for over 30 years, never had to replace the guts in it either like the newer ratchets.

That’s one of my dad’s ratchets. He got it from his older brother who passed away a couple years ago. They grew up on a farm in Nebraska. It’s possible it’s been around since then. Too bad the tools craftsman makes now aren’t that good. It says something when your tools outlive you.

P.S. Come to think of it, from what I’ve seen lately, Craftsman and Harbor Freight seem to be about on par with each other. Kind of funny really.

I make a habit of only buying tools that have a lifetime replacement warranty as I find they are of better quality as I can be quite abusive to them at times. I don't leave them out in the rain to rust or anything but looking at the marks on the handle I must say I'm guilty of attaching a torque amplifier to the end of it from time to time.

I've had mine apart twice to clean and re-lube.
Still works like a charm.
