Good research, Mark.
The MVMA specs are part of the "restoration package" that GM will send
you free of charge. Call GM Customer Service at 800-222-1020. They
will want your VIN.
Since minimun quench clearance is .035", on a nominal engine you
should take .010 off the deck to get to minumum quench clearance and
maximmize the CR. Of course, you should make all the measurements to
know where you engine actually is in the tolerance range.
Also, don't use a Felpro gasket. It's about .060" thick, compressed.
The Victor Reinz Vega Gasket available from NAPA is .045" compressed,
but you should route out the rear coolant transfer passage on the
exhaust side to match the OEM CV gasket, and, of course, with any Vega
gasket you will need a 3/32" oil restictor since it's not built into
the Vega head gasket.
