and gradually made it to 8 degrees advanced before I got the light
from my next door neighbor. It really is better now at 12. I have
never seen a set back light you mention, and I am not sure how it
works. However, I think I have got another problem. The last trip out
I noticed the exhaust looked like I was starting it up on a cold day.
I saw steam for about 30 seconds after start up ( it was inside the
garage and it was warm weather). I think I will be sick, because I
think the head gasket did not seal. It drives fine and I see no
significant coolant loss. The exhaust clears up and looks fine in
less than a minute. I pulled the plugs and looked carefully down the
holes and #2 looks like it could be leaking (looks moist). I changed
the oil and it was clean and free of coolant. I really dread pulling
the head off again, but I will as this is the only way to fix it. Any
advice on what might cause it to not seal or how to fix it? Is this a
common problem ? I will start pulling it this weekend. Thanks

Do a thorough check before pulling the head gasket. Check the oil,
the radiator fluid, check both levels, and also check what color the
exhaust is coming out of the tailpipe. It could be a valve seal, did
you change these before installing the head. CV 0999 has 85k original
miles on it, and the valve seals are bad. On start up, blueish smoke
comes out for less than a minute, than the exhaust looks fine. YES, I
KNOW THIS IS NOT AN IDEAL WAY TO TREAT THE MOTOR, before people start
yelling here, but currently two other CV projects are underway for
me. Anyway, do a thorough check before pulling the head,
Later,
John J, Cowall

Well I did not rebuild the head as maybe I should have. This engine was
rebuilt by the previous owner agout 2000 to 2500 miles ago, it has just been
sitting for 14 years. I am pretty sure that this is coolant as it dissapates
quickly and does not stink like fuel or oil smoke. I will know in a few days
what happened. C ya, Jon Denton #0409

What I ended up doing is going down to another parts store with the old
MC in the back of my truck. When the guy handed me the same type
as the McParts places tried, I explained what was happening. His
eyes lit up and said he had heard of this before and asked to see the old
one. After taking all the casting numbers and spending some time in
the books he was able to find what he thought would be a match. Of
course it had to be brought in from the regional warehouse *and* it
is new. (no core). He did have a kit for it though. I took that and
ordered the new one. At least that way I will have a spare.

I will try the light springs and the modified timing. Will I need to use high
octane fuel ? Will Auto Zone or Advance have the springs ? Thanks , Jon

I've had all my centrifugal advance in as early as 1800 with nothing
worse than a little light transient detonation below 2000 on a hot day
on 87 PON fuel - not enough to justify higher octane. I think that
was with springs from a '65 SHP/FI Corvette, and I've acquired other
light springs over the years from various sources. I am currently
running two sets of light springs so the advance doesn't start until
about 1000 and is all in at 2200. This yields outstanding 900 RPM
idle stability with the reindexed cams and a 10 degrees @ 8" vacuum
advance.

Hot rod shops and hot rod parts catalogs are probably the best source
for lighter springs.

Subject: [Cosworth Vegas] You have a new member

Well I just finished filling out my application to the CVOA and will
be dropping it in the mail tomarrow. It seems I am the proud owner
of #2713 1976 Black Cosworth . This will be my first Cosworth as
I have always wanted one and although looked at getting one back in
the 80's never got around to it until now. I hope that everyone
welcomes me. The car has had 3 previous owners ( 1 of them <1 yr)
and I purchased it off Ebay.. I did my homework prior to purchasing
it and found the last two previous owners and talked to each one..

It is Black with Hoothhound interior, rear defog, (swing-outs ?
dont know) , 58,100 miles, am-fm 8 track factory missing ( I will
try and replace) 5 speed, 4.10 rear end, Hutton rebuild with less
than 2,000 miles on.. incl DCOE Webbers , BDE hot cam , forged
racing pistons 9.5:1 , sleeved, stainless valves, ect.. (I talked to
Karl Hutton) has had new cam belt, dist belts replaced, new tires
raised whites, new clutch and exhaust, wheels been refinished and new
carpet. Purchase price was $3600 and I had the auction pulled
early.

Buying my first CV was a hard one and an exhaustive decision
process. I looked at alot of cars that is for sure, some low
milage , some never driven never titled , and some with Hutton
rebuilds,... What to buy was not so much of what I wanted but what
made practical sense.

I wish to thank everyone who helped me and coached me through this
and also all those sellers I talked to that showed me their cars that
were for sale.. They were all very nice, I was trying to find my
niche what suited me best. In buying this first car, I decided that
for what I wanted in being able to drive it once in awhile and take
it to car shows, and not knowing much about CV's as I will be
learning .... That it was best to go with something that has been all
gone over and had a fresher rebuild with the Hutton Webbers,.. As I
learn more about working on the CV's, the day will come when I will
get perhaps a 2nd CV low milage that I can restore and sit in my
garage and look pretty. But for right now, I want to restore and
detail this one best that I can and have some fun with it..

Thanks again for all the comments and help and I will have many
many more questions in weeks to come.. I cant wait to get the car as
I haven't seen it yet and will give everyone my first impression on
what it is like to drive a cosworth for the first time.
