Replacing T350 with a 700-R4

I'm wondering if I'm going to have to modify my
driveline, torque arm, & transmission crossbrace, or if it's
pretty much a direct replacement. I know the 82-92
Camaro's along with astro vans & some others used the
torque arm setup, so that part of it should be fairly
easy. I've also heard about having to run a converter
lockup for 4th gear, & needing an earlier,
non-electronic tranny, etc...I'm just getting tired of not being
able to DRIVE my car. it's got 4.10 gears, so having a
T350 along w/22" tall tires means 60mph is around
3,750rpm.
Thanks guys
~Kris

Your first question, yes, yes, and yes.

Oh, and a 22" tall tire is pretty darn short. What size tire are you running?

Hmm, get a taller tire? Now, I would go for the
700R4 AND a taller tire (15 or 16" rims with lower
profiles is still gonna get you a 25"+ tire) but it all
depends on your budget, etc. Both have their pluses and
minuses. Bigger wheel/tire combo should give you more
traction and a lower highway RPM, not to mention more
wheel/tire choices. However, it'll probably require you to
redrill or replace the axles. That problem isn't too bad,
though, considering the S-10 axles slide right in. Then
there's the problem with matching the front wheels.
Again, that's not a problem with Bob Gumm's adapters and
an S-10 spindle/caliper/rotor upgrade, or you can
simply redrill them or you can leave what's on
there.

Now, a 700R4 installation, lots more work, but not
undoable. Shorten driveshaft, move trans mount, make custom
torque arm mounting bracket, and you're all set.

Though I'm not sure I believe it, but I think I read recently that the 200r4 is the same length as a TH350. Have you considered that option?

I just sent out a 200-4R to get beefed up for my
Vega. Yes, the 200-4R is the same length as a
short-tail TH350. Unfortunately, the trans mount is in the
same place as the TH400, so the crossmember must be
moved. Also, my trans man said he likes the 200-4R over
the 700R4 for small blocks since the 200-4R has a
tighter gear spread for 1st and 2nd gear; there's less
RPM drop for the shift.

Only vehicles in production that I know of after the hbody was fbody's and chevettes/clones.
I know for a fact that the astro van NEVER ran a torque arm.

Kris,
I'm planning on a 2004R for my Skyhawk.
Same mods but you don't have to change the drive
shaft. The rear mounting point for the trans is just a
little over 6" longer than the TH350. The gearing is
similar to the TH350 and has a little advantage over the
700 gearing if 1/4 mile times are a concern (doesn't
drop the rpm's as much). Steve Holmes from Bow Tie
Overdrive responded to a club member and talked about both
trannies saying that with their mods the could handle
550hp. Check this out if you want. http://www.700r4.com

yep hte astro didn't use a torque arm, but it has 2 ears on the tailhousing so that the monza torque arm support can be bolted to it
Denis
ps the ears were there to mount a big weight
