DITTO! I have a 454SS pickup and I know a
new
smogged BBC won't rev up like an older 455,
but I
have a T400 & 3.73s and I'll be lucky to
get 120
mph with 28" tall tires.I can nurse that
TBI and
at 60 mph I'm happy with 18 mpg.

How can you get 18mpg????? I have a 90 454ss also, and at best 11 on the freeway! The window sticker only showed 10 mpg on the freeway. 120, yah, she'll do it....

Jeff

28" tall tires and 3.73s = 5400 rpm at 120.

My 454SS is all stock and pretty tight, when I
have premium in her and I nurse her along at 60
I can get 18 mpg. I didn't say it was for long,
who can keep their foot out of it.

1:1 hi-gear or OD 4th gear?
Also,Car&Driver
did a speedo accuracy test on some top notch cars.I
think(if the gray matter hard drive is correct) that they
tested a C4 Vette,Ferrari,Countach,and
VW,er,ah,Porsche. The registered MPH was off as much as 20% compared to
the radar gun.
So,you can imagine the variance in
a 30+ year old GM cable driven speedo. The variance
may not be that much at 60MPH compared to mile
markers.Yet,on like most things automotive, the total rises
exponentually as the constant is doubled.
Ah....yeah.sumthin
like that
Frank

Okay, okay, I guess I should clarify a few
things!!! You have to realize, at the time I was a 17 y/o
kid with to much of his oldest brothers toy to play
with. While I may be off on the going over 160... but
the speedo WAS pointed straight down.. and this isn't
a quarter mile number either. This was pedal flat
to the floor and engine winding WAY THE HELL OUT. I
don't remember the RPM, all I remember was seeing the
needle pointing straight down well past the 160 mark. I
always told people where it was pointing and then told
them I figured about 130 or a little more allowing for
error. I will confirm the 22 mpg though. Face it, a '68
'Bird is a helluva lot more areodynamic then a 454 SS,
that is a brick with wheels, and yes it had a rear
spoiler. And considering how badly that engine would
starve for gas on just the single barrel of the center
carb at over about 70... Of course when I stepped into
it a little farther to smack those damn 5.0s back
into their proper place you could watch the gas gauge
drop as the other 5 bbls of carb opened up and the car
launched itself into the next state. 22 mpg at about 55 is
close.. maybe a little high.. but close.
Here's hoping
these honest corrections are excepted,
John

160 is pretty damn fast. I've seen 150 on a motorcycle (Triumph Speed Triple) but never in a car.
