Also I never thought it was worth it to pay for
Jet Hot {around $300} because accidents do happen and
headers do get smashed, and your out $300+ for headers
and $300 for coating. I figuered I could buy a spare
set with that money. A guy I know has a 454 in his
Monza with Jet Hot Headers, and he went with Canfield
Heads and had to add sections to his headers cause the
exaust ports are higher, so he had to have them recoated
and know he has over a $1000 in headers.

I think that short header life might be caused by
short runs not getting all the moisture bunrt out. My
wifes car sits all winter, but she drives it 15 miles
one way to work 5 days a week in the summer.

Hopefully the thing that saved the headers on my monza was he never had exaust on them long and when it was he had the cutouts open and that was full throttle passes on an 11sec. car. Lets hope!!!

I assume you mean the insulator length? I was not aware you could get 'short' plugs... Interesting approach! How do I find these?

They make "shorty" Plugs just for header
applications. I've never userd them, but I think they were
listed in Summit, Jegs, or PAW's. The last time I
changed plugs in my monza, I took out AC plugs and put in
Autolite's (if I remember rihgt) and the new ones I put in
had about a 1/4" longer insulator.The reason I
remember this is because I had a hell of a time getting
the #1 or #3 plug insulator back on so I started to
compare and the plug from the base of the threads to the
tip was longer. I'm not positive on the brands of the
plugs, but I do remember they were the same heat range.
Maybe someone here in the club that works a an
autoparts store could get out various brands of plugs and
document this more.

Headers are a pain in the butt here in LA(lower
alabama).If they're not coated,they rot,and the whoopie-doo's
in the roads,'drainage' ramps into &out of
businesses,rip the collectors,mufflers or pipes
off.Besides,$200-400 dollars for 30HP is bad math,in my book.Now for a
drag-race H-body(aah,I am talking about H-body's
here, right?) then this "bundle of snakes" is worth the
trouble.Even on the small out law tracks around here w/ the
dirt road return lanes.("I have to buy another set of
slicks?")
I like ported cast iron exhaust manifolds w/ heat
shields.No brainer,easily works like an anvil,and a lot less
HVN(harmonics/vibration/noise).
Just me holding forth for what it's worth.

Short plugs are made by Accell. Give Summit or Jegs a call. Clyde

Frank,

Simpler is usually better, so I do
agree with you. However, those stock manifolds runout
of room after about 4000 rpm, so you cant realy put
to big of a cam in the motor. So the headers
themselves with no other changes dont add much HP, but they
allow to add more cam, carb, etc which can really push
the HP up. Everythings is a compromise I
guess!

Cheers!

Jeff, yes the stock exh manifolds are RPM
limiting. The claimer motor round trackers have to use cast
manifolds,so they have them ported.Car Craft listed an IROC
Z/28 that almost flows as good as headers, having a
2.5" outlet.These should work in an h-body.For me,the
secondary roads around here are so whoopie-do'ed that
headers would just get beat to death, and unless they are
coated won't last.I'm looking at a torquer motor any way
as this will be a street/SCCA SoloII car,w/ the
dream of running the Silver State Classic.
And,yes,
everything is a compromise.
Frank
