High Output alternators

Postby acstestinc » Fri Jan 19, 2007 8:04 am

Is there a bolt in Hight output alternator (eg: 90 or 100 amp) for H-bodies. Specifically V8's with A/C.

I seem to recall that the factory is only in the 55 or 60 amp range.

Thanks
Paul

Around 1986, GM switched to the CS series alternator. These came in a 70 amp version - cs121, a 100 amp - cs130 and a hi current version - cs144.

The CS130 when equipped with a long, straight drive end plate will bolt in place of the original delco 10SI alternator. The regulator plug has 4 pins so u will need to change that.

Pin 1 - Larger pin than the other 3 and this is the sense wire. This needs to go to battery positive in at least 12 gauge. Dont just loop it to the output terminal.

Pin 2 - I/F terminal - switched 12v will excite alternator here.

Pin 3 - Light terminal - switched 12v thru a dash light will excite alternator here

Pin 4 - 7vac stator output - sometimes used for electric chokes, tach signal etc.

Large M6 stud - Charge wire needs to be in at least 8 gauge wire or 2 number tens. Run straight to batt positive with a 6 inch chunk of fuse link wire at batt.

A couple more pics. You can see the #8 charge wire and #12 sense wire joined together before the fuse link. (I used 2 links cuz I only have the one gauge in stock) The other 2 wires are the factory feeds for the bulkhead connector and A/C. Factory feeds them from the starter solenoid but I always change that cuz if a link were to go bad, it would require dropping the exhaust and starter to repair.

Good info, Zeke. Does that alternater have a threaded hole in the back for the bracket in this pic? Even if re-clocked? Could you get a measurement from the face to the back? Thanks.

Sunbirdman, the cs130 drive end plate is available in either threaded or un-threaded versions. Distance from center of pivoting ear to center of tensioning hole is approx. 6.5 inches. A shorter end plate is also avail which may work better in your bird.

Yes the slip ring end plate has the threaded (m8 x 1.25) hole for rear brace. A re-clock of the alternator and it may line up for you.

Approx. 4.25" from front of drive end plate to top of rear brace mount on slip ring end plate. :)

Hey guys. I'd like some advice about alternators:

I'm not planning on needing much power but I will need power for a higher output electric fuel pump that's about it though. I don't have AC or a stereo. I'll probably just run a simple radio. Do these smaller alternators drag less? And how much output would I need? Would one of these 70 amp units work well? I have NO idea what I'm talking about when it comes to alternators so I really appreciate the advice. I can fabricate my brackets if necessary so I'd like to get the best alternator for my app.

Thanks in advance for the help!

IMO the CS 130 Delco Alternator is perfect for this application. It is capable of 100 amps continuous and 130 amp peaks in a small frame size. Going with the cs121 wont save u any appreciable horse power either. :)

Awesome info zeke!!!!

Now I've got two questions. What is the lower bracket that you used? I see that you probably made the one, but the other stamped steel bracket is what I'm looking at. I like it since it brings the alternator close to the waterpump than what I have now.

And... I was looking at some of those alternators at the parts store today and they all had serpentine drives. Will an older v-belt pulley/fan swap right into place?

The lower bracket is the stock monza alt bracket when they came with A/C and I did make the back one that runs to the head cuz Im missing the compressor mounts.

Shaft size is the same so your orig pulley will work.

That is what I've been looking for...a bracket mount just like that that. Anymore floating around? Is it for the short WP? Your just a couple of hours from me so we will have to hook up come spring.

Yep, short water pump with a 3/8 - 16 threaded hole on the top of it for bracket.

I think Kline1 on the forum here may have an extra alt. bracket?

if you want to go to the aftermarket, there's a company called "tuffstuff" that makes several styles of 100+ amp alternators.
