Try Federated?

Postby Tailssideup » Mon Jan 29, 2007 4:42 pm

I went to my local federated when the Sunbird broke the drivers side mount and they had both of them. Though that was for the V6, so you might get lucky.

1979 Chevrolet Monza Coupe

That's why we are here, so don't feel bad about asking questions. When the H-body first came out there were no V8 options, only the 4 cylinder. Back in the day, it was very popular to swap a V8 into a Vega. This was usually done with a swap kit from various manufacturers like Hooker, Trans Dapt, Don Hardy etc. All of these kits used a front engine mount arrangement, not sure why, but that's how they all mounted a smallblock into a Vega. Remember, at this time there were no V8 Monza's to use parts off of. When the factory came out with the V8 Monza in 1975 it opened up a whole bunch of V8 parts that would now work on the earlier Vega's. So, there are two ways to mount a smallblock into a H-body, the factory way with factory engine AND frame mounts or use one of the earlier design kits with a front engine mount. Not to offend anyone, but I would stick with the factory arrangement since that's the way most V8's were installed since way back in the early 60's or late 50's. All of the factory stuff will also probably fit better with the stock type mounts. The problem is they are not available new anywhere. So, you are stuck with using used mounts or getting some like Bob has made up.

I see you're wanting to put a 305 in place of a V6. So like Roger said you will need motor mounts (stock or Gumm) and the stock frame plates. Here's a picture of what you need:

From what I am understanding the factory mounts just tend to sag a little? I don't really see that as a big deal in the immediate future. So the ones that I told you about would work.

If you can get your hands on some used OEM-style V8 h-body mounts (even worn out sagging ones), you can refresh them with a procedure listed in the FAQ section 2.8:

2.8 What is one way to fix sagging motor mounts?

Nick (nickster1_99) suggests: "Here is a tip for all you with sagged out motor mounts. I bought some older style mounts for a 60s Chevrolet--the "pancake" style. I then took apart my sagged out oil soaked mounts. The part that bolts to the frame of the car was saved, the rest tossed. I then took this U shaped piece and then hacked out the middle, leaving 2 legs per side. I flattened out the bends at the top of these legs then drilled holes for 7/16" bolts to go through. I then bolted these legs to the pancake style mounts and compared to the other side mount (I only did 1 side at a time). It was appx 1/4-3/8" higher. I just bolted these mounts in place when I installed my engine. I am very pleased. They sit at a good height and the steering does't even come close to the oil pan. The prevoius owner achieved the same thing by putting shims under the mounts at the frame. The mounts ran approximately $20 a piece when I bought them. It took me approximately 1 hour for each mount (measure twice, cut once).

The front mounts are not ideal but they will work. I think the main reason to use them is if you want to run headers (like the 2129s) that would interfere with the stock mounts.

Darrell,

The second listing, either are Bob Gumm's mounts or they are someone elses recreation of them.

The ones in the first listing, with the plates, look to be OEM style from Chevy.

So, either one will work.

The ones pictured in those ebay ads are side mounts (factory style). If you already have the frame plates that shytebucket posted above, then all you need are the mounts from that second ebay ad.

I'm not really sure what's in the first ebay ad are really h-body parts. They don't look right.

As for front mounts... I would bet you can still get the front mounts from places like Summit, Jegs, etc.

If you use front mounts you don't need the factory-style mounts or frame plates. Two parts are welded into the engine compartment near the front and two parts bolt to the front of the motor. Then these parts are mounted together using rubber isolators.

Here are front mounts from a couple of angles:

Notice the space opened up by not using the factory-style side mounts or plates--this is room for big headers. The general feeling is that you would only use these mounts if you can't use the factory-style side mounts. For me, they let the motor drop so that the oil pan rubbed the steering link, they were a pain to install, and they got in the way. So when I decided against using the 2129 headers that required these front mounts in the first place, I went back to a factory style mount. But they will work if you need them to.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this first set is Vsix mounts.

Can you use power steering or A/C with the front mounts?
