New on/off switch rules?

Postby TopNX75 » Fri Jan 04, 2008 8:11 pm

The last time I was at the local track, they told me that for 2008 all on/off switches had to be "push/pull". The twist style would no longer pass tech. Has anyone else heard of this? Is this in the new IHRA or NHRA rule book?

Just asking before I have to spend MORE money!

WHAT?

I can't imagine so? The flip switch has been around for ages, and is on 90% of the drag cars out there. That's what I have on the Astre.

I can't imagine why? A push/pull is essentially an assembly using a flip switch.

Seems there are a few little changes needed now. Heard talk about a tap in the fuel line to the carb being needed to get a fuel sample taken. Guess the idea is to get a sample of what is going right to the carb and to make it a little easier to extract one......Dean. :?

NHRA has a rule for 2008 that says disconnect must be a push pull type and extend past the tires.
Its my understanding this applies to dragster type vehicles, due to having to reach between the tires to get to a disconnect switch.

I'll have to research this. I sure as hell hope not. I wanted to run a push/pull but space limitations make it hard to run on these cars.

What is the threshold or spec, that this is necessary for?

Is it for the battery being located in the back? I can't remember.

Pretty much just for a trunk mounted battery.

Anything 9.99 and faster, has to have a switch for the fuel/ignition. . . . . Yes, they changed to the push/pull type, but I've still got the rotary type, and so far. .. . they haven't pushed it. ..

I've never raced a car at a dragstrip but was thinking someday just for kicks see what my Sunbird would do. This thread got me to look up the rules about trunk mounted batteries. I'm in the middle of moving my battery to the trunk. I'm putting it in the spare tire well. If I sealed the top of the well with a sheet of aluminum, would this be acceptable for sealing the battery from the driver compartment? I'm installing a remote starter solenoid to the spare tire well also. So the positive cable to the starter will be dead except while cranking. Everything else is powered off a #8 gauge wire. Would the #8 be all I need to hook to the push-pull switch? Thanks.

Roger, don't forget to vent the battery. If you put it in the spare tire well and sealed it off you may get gas build up inside the battery compartment.

I am building a new car currently and the NHRA Chassis Tech Inspector -- Wayne Lewis -- lives just a few miles from me and is helping me get my new car to pass Certification to 7.50's correctly. Next time he drops by to see if I am ready to finally weld it all up I will try to remember to ask him. He is the one that travels to all the NHRA events and your ride has to pass tech by him to run any class if it has never received an NHRA Tech Inspection Sticker. I'll try to find out !!
