I think there are several folks looking it over but no one as of yet actually attempting it....

Hmm....Leaf springs?

Unless you could mount the axle on top of the leaf spring and extend the shackle...you would have alot of axle wrap up...either that or way to stiff of a spring.
Leaf springs for a car this light would be hard to come by unless you used some of the mopar superstock springs or some fiberglass leaf springs.

But either way I think that the coil spring or even a coilover setup can be made narrower, more stabil, and will hook better when set up properly....Plus if youre gonna go through all that fab work you might as well just back half the car and go prostreet coil over anyway.

Leaf springs always seem kinda archaic to me...like the caveman (not the member here) of Suspensions.
Great for trucks though.
Just my .02

I just want to see the plans for the dimentions. I'd alter them for coil overs, lower control arms and torque arm. Might just be as easy to start from scratch though.

Ive been doing alot of comtemplating about building a rear frame, and was actually thinking of molding/welding frame rail right into the existing sheet metal back there. JUst weld it right onto the bottom of the floor, cross brace it, and use gussets in tight corners.

I figured that 2x2 or 2x3 steel square tube would be fine at .120 thick. Also bars going across for coilovers would help out too.

Im thinking that it wouldnt be that hard or too intrusive....especially if you had a roll cage and coult tie the rear down bars into it....as well as the shock mounts and coil spring perches.

Sorry...a little off topic there.

God bless

leaf springs and rear frames

Postby chevyart » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:36 pm

leaf springs work great, if you you use a good slapper bar or calvert traction bar. I run in the 10s with a SBC in my 67 nova and never had a problem (I use 14 inch slicks) Am switching to John Calverts traction bars and his two piece mono leaf springs (He will make them custom length for you and custom spring rate to raise or lower the back of your car. Only real disadvantage of leaf springs is that they weigh a good bit more than a coil spring rear suspension, bu that extra weight helps traction in alot of cars that need the weight over the tires. Attn Sir shredalot; Alotr of guys make the rear chassis out of 1 5/8 round tubing ( a good quality steel) and it works just fine and the real good news is that you can bend it in a bender, very easily and custom fit it by trying the fit and bending until it fits. Global west suspensions in california ( WWW.globalwest.net) makes alot of their subframe connectors with the 15/8 tubing. check them out, they are a real good company for suspension parts Chevy Art

would it be better to use this set up but with a 4 link system with coil-overs and ladder bars on it than mess with leaf springs? id still want to see someones car with this installed before id even think ofm hacking mine up... even the guy who built it dose not have pics of it installed i have 2 sets of these plans they look good BUT..... need to be proven

2 sets of the same plans? Send me the steel and the plans and I'll take the leap. Oh, you have to send a leaf sprung 9" rear narrowed to the correct width also.

You don't ask for much, do you Matt. With your weldings skills, you should be able to build one (or two) in 30 minutes or so.

I just wanna point out the irony because it seems to be lost.

This is a set of fabrication plans for a bolt-in subframe. Isn't that an oxymoron? If you have the skill to build the subframe, wouldn't you be better off fabbing it into the car instead of building a seperate assembly and then trying to fit it in?????

FWIW leafs with sliders/rotators and a lower link can be a solid strip performer.

Good luck
