vega hood alteration

Postby chevyart » Wed Oct 19, 2022 4:22 pm

could use a little advice on best way to cut out a 14 inch circular pattern on the underside webbing on a stock vega hood. dont want to damage the topside finished on the stock steel hood. i need to pick a little clearance to clear the single plane intake on my small block 408 cube engine. if that dont work, then i have to still do this procedure and also add a hood scoop(which i dont want to do)(love the shape of the stock hood). next question would be if anyone ever saw a stock vega steel hood with the nice center of the hood raised up a few inches in order to put a wide air cleaner under the hood(14 inch width is minimum that would be needed) thanks Art in NY

Art I think that a cardboard template with some clearance [1/2-3/4" per side with rubber mounts I would think less if solid mounted] around your Air Filter, should be used to layout what you want cut out. Then using a cut-off wheel you should be able to remove the offending bracing, [with much caution! I know Duh!]. The bracing on most things I've paid attention to aren't welded to, or even touching in the center just some foam like adhesive product. I would then have made or make yourself a ring with a flange wrapped around and tac that in to re-strengthen the hood not likely as strong as pre "Mod's" but should help significantly. Harry

thanks harry.hope it is just a foam type material supporting the hood bracing. i will proceed with caution when cutting it out. i will mark out a 15 inch diameter circle(71/2 inch radius from center of hood as it will most likely be a 12 inch diameter air cleaner and also allowing for the offset of v8 engine towards passenger side.sure appreciate your info thanks Art in NY

allstar makes a 14” air cleaner base with a 1.5” drop and also a lid with a taller bubble in the center for choke tower clearance,
Then use a 14x2.625 filter. This fits under the stock hood without cutting the braces on an Performer RPM air gap.

smiley thanks for the reply and pics of the air cleaner. didnt even see pics until today(sat)., i know about the allstar AC, the LT1 and l88 air cleaners have 2 inch dropped base and were designed to flow air better(uphill) . i have a holley race carb on car with no choke housing. My problem is that the Intake manifold is a single plane and is probably about a inch and a half taller than the performer RPM air gap.. i think my only hope is to use the Spectre air box( sheet metal type)(#9804) and cut out a little circle of the underhood brace for the little clearance i will need with this air box.. a friend has one on his car and will lend it to me to check fitment. thanks Art
