I've seen tags like that before. One of the Road Hawks I've parted out had a plastic cowl tag with no words, just the numbers and codes, it didn't even say "Body by Fisher". But even it looked better than yours does. There doesn't seem to be any set rules about the tags, I've got pics from all models and all years with both types of tags. Don't understand it myself.

The Federal Conformity statement:

It's most common on Lordstown Cars. For H bodies, It started Vegas' but not sure exactly what year it started.
It stayed on tags right through the change over to monza's in 1978..

It carried on, on the new H bodies until late April / early may 1978, when it disappeared.

The same paragraph was available on the door sticker. So the cars still carried the message to the consumer.

Tags no longer carried the statement through to the last cars 1980/81.

Canadian built cars... The St Therese plant used it for 1975. It appears the 76 and 77 cars didn't have it.

Well, there's another 'FUL' code ... I just saw that code on another vega tag...you'd have to compare buildsheets and options to find out what it was for.

Looks pretty standard. Thanks for sharing. Looks like tagging operations were the same right thru 78/79.

Your color codes look correct to your car. Numbers seem to match up.. Here's something jumping out at me.. seems as if with the later H body cars they only worked 20 days a month (weekends off) but the latest Vega tags I've seen correspond to 30 days a month.
Stivie, looks like yours was built on the 174th production day for the 75 model year, on the last week of February.

How do you decode production numers on these plates?

160,523 - 234 = 160,289

Why is it "260,289" on the plate?

Easy... the first Chevy down the line start at 100,001. So anytime you see a Chevy VIN subtract 100,000 to produce the actual number.

To provide unique VIN's for each model down the same line..Pontiac's Started at 500,001 Olds started at 300,001 , Buicks at 400,001

Chevy reserved 100,000 through 200,000 So they room to count over 100,001. Pontiac had the possibility of going to 600,000+ if they went over 100,000 Unit's.

Pretty cool Brian, thanks for posting..

Built a few weeks before my spyder, built on the 165th day of production, in line at slot 8790. Body was #333287 (this number counted Vans that were built at a separate plant on the same property). I have a tag from a monza sport nose notchback that was found in Arizona.. built 4 days later on day 169.

My chart shows day 165 to have been Wednesday, May 3rd 1978... Your build sheet should say 05-03 in the upper left hand box. The trim tag correctly displays "05A" which indicates the first week of May, 1978.

Red/red interior

The federal conformity statement at the bottom only lasted on trim tags through the end of this month. Not found on any July tags, or any other tags thereafter. incl 79/80.

I got that picture just for you! :th: I put some additional info/pics on the post about this 78 Starfire SX with only 48k (first CL add said 28k) in Plainfield IN. I thought maybe you didn't see it after a few days so I posted it here.

Wish it was mine but that's just the way it goes. Very nice car I hope a member or future member gets it.

Thanks for the decode! Brian

Thanks man, let us know what you find.

I'm on a personal quest for 1978 Trim Tags.. I need some from week "05C" to see exactly when the federal conformity paragraph, was dropped. So Far it looks like 05B was the last week. But there's no current records for 05C.

Any trim tag or buildsheet will be welcomed.

One of the guys also came across a Sunbird coupe in a yard. It's in the background of a picture he took. I'll see if I can find it. I also know other people with Spyders...I'll contact them

Hi I have attached the Trim Tag off my 1980 Monza. I have owned this car since 1984 and as for as I know it is a genuine factory Spyder. It is a Quad H/L Hatchback with the 3.8l Auto, dark metallic blue exterior, blue cloth interior, bucket seats, tinted windows, tilt steering, tach/full gauge instruments. It does have all the correct Spyder feautures, blacked out H/L bezels and tail light trim and all window trim. All 3 Spyder emblems, Front, rear and Horn Button, front and rear spoilers and it did have all the correct blue Spyder Decals on it back in the day when I bought it.

As for the body/trim tag I know the 29L/29U are the upper and lower paint color. I'm interested in knowing if anyone can tell me what the 26J, A51 and B29 are? Also just for curiosity I think the 27-4583 decodes to when it was built but I don't know how to decode it. I'm assuming since this is a 1980 model that it would have had to been built at the Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant.

Any input would be appreciated, thanks, Lorne.

Hey Lorne.

Your car is absolutely a genuine Spyder, the '29' on the 3rd line represents the RPO Code Z29 for Spyder Equipment and Appearance Package. The 26A represents the blue Spyder striping decals set. The build date is the 03A on the first line, representing build on the 1st week ('A') of the 3rd month, March, 1980. 26J is the interior colour/combo code, for 1980 it was Blue Pompey Woven Cloth interior. A51 is present on ALL H-Bodies ,and simply represent the seat pattern, in the monza case, bucket seats (as opposed to bench or other types of seating GM had). The 27-4583 is a plant use code, but unknown further. The 'B' is also an unknown. It was thought to represent a black dash bottom (rather than interior colour), but that hasn't been totally consistent. What colour is the bottom of your dash (the part that houses the lights, radio, under the steering wheel, etc)? Yes, Lordstown assembly is represented by the '7' at the start of the 3rd sequence of numbers on the 1st row.
Cheers
Bryan
