NO GAS TO MOTOR ???

Postby SOLSAKS » Thu Jan 28, 2021 4:41 pm

posting this hear also

to see if anyone has any thoughts.

dave here in NC

been a while

got another tech question (same one again )

run down on details so it will refresh your memory

1977 notchback
monza
factory 5.0
bone stock resto
no deviations from factory
new motor
new fuel lines
now on second brand new in tank fuel pump

ran fine during and after restoration

sat a few weeks
would not crank

runs if you pour gas into carb

no gas getting to carb

first time, we changed out the NOS ac/delco pump
with new carter pump, would not start

we blew air thru the metal line at charcoal canister,...
heard slosh in tank

then it cranked and ran fine
came back 5 days later, cranked and ran

next time, a week later
will not crank

will run if pouring gas into carb

this time
we took off oil pressure switch near distributor
bypassed it with a wire looped back into plug

it did not work

we cant hear elec pump running at all

we blew air thru line to tank again
it forced gas to flow out of line to carb

we hooked line back up
but once fuel was gone from forced ait, gas flow quit.

we wonder
is something starving the pump,.ruining it,.... or vapor locking it ?

got to be something simple

when i got car back to restore
the previous owner had rigged an elec pump outside of tank to push fuel to motor

did chevy have trouble with this set up
and was that done a lot over the years.....

grabbing at straws

any help appreciated.

If you are not hearing the fuel pump, pull the gas line off at the carb and jump the Oil pressure switch. If you don't get gas the pump isn't running. It sounds like the connector to the fuel pump on top of the tank is not making the connection to the pump. You'll need to drop the tank to get at it and verify the connection.

First check and see if with the key turned you have 12 volts at the oil pressure switch and that you are jumping that switch correctly, if memory serves me right that is a 3 wire plug. I think Clyde has responded before on this topic and knows the wire colors both at the oil switch and the tank. If you have 12 volts at the oil pressure switch then you will likely have to drop the tank and with the key turned on and the oil pressure switch plug jumped see if you have 12 volts at the connector at the tank. If you have 12 volts there then it looks like a dead pump. And Dave if you can't figure it out and want to donate your car I will take it any day, LOL! Then I can be like Zeke and have a notchback and a hatchback, lol.

Honestly though let us know how you make out, sad to see all that work go into her and have her just sitting for what appears to be a fairly minor issue.

thanx gerbsinmind and 79. Monza Spyder
I feel like donating it,....

you are right, a lot of work over 5 years, and it is a boat anchor

I really appreciate this detailed help

Clyde has responded to me via email

with a detailed response with wire colors etc....

al this makes perfect sense, I will get a buddy to help

hopefully we can get it on the road.

ONE ADDITIONAL PROBLEM:,....well 2.....

the seat bottoms are supposed to have a slope, from front to back.
makes you sit lower,... for more headroom

well
the guy who did the upholstery on front 2 seats
built the slope "up" !!!,....thinking it needed it.....

the foam buns are all new, I have to take them apart
take to upholsterer to fix the issue

I hate to cause they are perfect,... but useless as is,...I am 5'7" and my head hits headliner...!!!
and the first upholsterer is no longer around.

2nd issue: the ACC carpet set does not fit well near gas pedal.
as we know the pedal is too small anyway
and my foot can barely get to it.
thinking of cutting it away near pedal until I can remedy issue
cause pressing the accelerator is cumbersome.

STAY TUNED I wil report back

dave:)

WOW, LOVE IT! Nice rig, again like the Monza's, you just don't see those older Wagoneer's anymore. My buddy in high school had one of the "like the Chevy Suburban" type Wagoneer's, not sure what Jeep called them, I always thought it look cool and different. Nice job Dave. I finally started my Monza Build "Project Spyder Clone". It will be slow, got to juggle the wife's needs and my son and I are building it together and he has a wife and Kids too so getting time on it will be a challenge but I hoping to work on it once or twice a week.

Hey Dave, is this the Wagoneer I polished those stainless strips for you?
With the ACC carpet problem, it is important not to use much insulation under the carpet on the tunnel. It just limits the clearance between your foot and the hump.

yes
you polished some strips for the wagoneer
it is white, a 1988

they looked great installed.

on th emonza foot well problem:

I did use a lot of insulation, etc.,... I will try that first,...( remove insulation.)

would love to find a donor set of OEM custom/deluxe interior Monza seats or at least seat bottoms
to help make the fix easier,.....maybe....

A upholsterer should be able to trim back that foam without much issue. It's just a matter of him knowing what the shape is supposed to be.

Dave I have a set of UGLY red vinyl seats front and rear that I believe the foam is good on, vinyl is 2-20 [she's a 2 from 20 feet out] I really don't want to separate them and shipping from here to NC would be painful to say the least. Keep that in mind if you become desperate, also the Camaro foams from that style of seat would match up I'm told [from this site], key is matching the correct Camaro trim style/level for a match. And again a Big WIN with the Wagoneer , I too am a fan of the Wagoneer/(Grand) Cherokee/Comanche's of that body style, a very commanding presence with the requisite style to back that up! I see a "Square Body" Suburban/Blazer there too! Som Beotch that is a beautiful trio you have, I'd lose my mind [what's left of it] trying to decide which one to drive. 1st world problems I suppose, I'd come to terms with that indecision real quick! Thanx again for getting us all fired up! I mean sharing! Harry

Dave I didn't catch the corner of the square body in the pic. I restored two motorcycles and then my square body I have owned for 36 years. I restored a match vintage 11' camper that's on it as well.
