nope, no V8's for 1980. I always wanted a V8 Monza but ended up buying a V6 (blue car), just couldn't find a nice stockish factory V8 that wasn't priced well beyond reasonable, most had been shit kicked and beaten to death and at that time I wasn't in to a project of that magnitude. So, after my son took a turn at my blue Monza and blew it up a couple times he parked and and bought the 1980 Teal roller that was born as a V6 4 speed but someone had put a 350 in it before we bought the car. My son's plans were to take the good stuff off the blue car and build the Teal car but his build concept exceeded his budget and the idea died. Flash forward a few years and we are going to build a mild 305 4 speed car to start with as I have most of the bits to do that on a reasonable budget. And then once its on the road we can start enjoying it we will probably build a mild 350 for it. But to start we just want to get it back on the road again, you simply do not see these cars on the road where I live anymore. Someone has a coupe near me, mostly stock, unrestored but cared for. That's the only Monza/Sunbird/SkyHawk I have seen in the last 5 years.

Finally got some time back on the Monza, My Eastwood order finally arrived after 3 months. So I got my exhaust manifolds and heat shields painted, used the brush on for the manifolds and spray for the heat shields, will see how well it holds up. At least it will start out looking nice. Also installed my Bob Gumm Motor mounts. Just have to make a bracket for my dip stick since the original on is missing.

Well, close to a year of zero progress on the Monza, still have a couple projects in front of it. So, I decided to do something on it today that I could get done in a few minutes. Sometimes its the stupidest little things that give a feelings of at least some progress and accomplishment. I made and installed the Spyder decal for the rear hatch. The car is missing all the Spyder decals and since it will be some time before we get to body work and paint I am going to install a set of Spyder graphics on the old paint just while we drive it around and they will work as a test run for the final decal install for when we get the paint work done.

Well finally getting back on the Monza. Took it out of the garage and washed it. First time it’s seen the light in 10 years. Plan on starting on the rear and tank, drop the tank and then clean and coat it inside and out and I have a new fuel pump for it as well and the tank rubber kit from Clyde. Going to put a fresh coat of undercoat on it to clean it up, no rust under there. And a repaint for the rear end and then a fluid change and all new rear brakes.

Back at it the other day. She’s up on stands and the tank is pulled. Going to pick the best of the 3 tanks I have and then rebuild one. While the tanks out and the rest of the driveline is out we are going to tidy up everything firewall back, clean up the rear diff, (posi unit), new fluid etc and rebuild the rear brakes and replace the flex hose and parking brake cables. Amazed how clean it is underneath, virtually no heavy rust just a bit of surface rust here and there. Going to clean that up. I will post a couple picks next week, need to drop the resolution to post them.

A few pic's next is to pull the exhaust and keep just the manifold to post muffler sections, the exhaust is garbage but it will be put back on temporarily to test run the engine and lot drive it until we are ready to put a road day permit on it and take it in for all new exhaust.

So finally got it cleaned and undercoated firewall all the way to the back bumper. New fluid in the diff and all new rear brakes done. New stainless brake lines installed on the diff. Will install the rest of the stainless brake lines after we finish painting the engine bay. Some pics will be posted once we get the springs, pan hard bar and shocks back in.

Well finally got it back together. Was a bit interesting. We put the springs back and and installed the shocks and when we lowered the jack off the rear end the springs virtually fell back out. And I’m telling my son, that’s not right. What is going on. After some brainstorming a light bulb went on and I said to my son I bet someone cut the coils to drop the ride height. Went and pulled a spring out of our other Monza and yup, two more coils on those springs. Anyway, so we cleaned up those springs and installed them. Everything fit great after that. Sure is nice having a parts car for parts and reference since we bought the other car as a roller so not certain what some previous owned did to it.pics to come.
