Outage and aggressive bots

Postby monzamess » Fri May 10, 2024 9:49 am

Couple of calamities for our little website recently.

Yesterday, the hosting provider's server had a hard problem and the site was down all day. That was resolved yesterday evening.

Bots/crawlers continue to be a cat-and-mouse game. Good bots don't slow down the site and catalog our information, which helps other H-body people find us, so that's worthwhile. However, bad bots flood the website in what is effectively a denial of service attack. They're not targeting us to attack us, but the bot makers take no steps to prevent it either. The most recent worst offender is Claudebot, which has taken down several other small forums, then various poorly-behaved crawlers usually out of China. I've blocked a lot and we're operating well for now.
