4 speed to 5 speed swap

Postby truck6driver » Sat May 03, 2025 12:58 am

Hey all,

Having looked back through old post I didn't see what i needed.
I just picked up a '76 Astre 100% stock. 4 cyl 4 spd car. I am just going to drive the car and enjoy it for what it is. This will be my 3rd H body that I have owned but my last one was in the early 90ies so it's been a while.
I have a T50 5 speed sitting in the garage that I would like to put in the car. I don't have any plans on doing a V8 anytime soon so I will get that out of the way up front. Doing some searching on clutches, I found there are 2 different input shaft splines. and I know there are differences in some of the gear ratios.
But the information that I need is this, to replace the 4 spd with the 5 spd what else will I need? I have heard drive shaft, others say torque arm is a different as well. Has anyone done this swap and if so what do I need to buy before trying to do this? some say the floor pan needs to be cut as well.

Thanks

Ray
I am positive that the last words I say will be......."That did no go like I planned"

Yes,the driveshaft and torque arm are different. IIRC, the transmission crossmember is different, as well. The hole in the tunnel is slightly rearward, but you can modify that if you can’t find the correct tunnel plate.
