Which 4 speed

Postby Trap4x4 » Sat Nov 27, 2021 2:17 pm

I acquired a '80 pontiac sunbird formula. Has the buick v6 3.8. However the 4 speed tranny is gone. Im not certain what tranny pontiac would have used or what other vehicles would have had the same tranny to begin a search for a replacement. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

Saginaw, should have the tab cast on the rear bottom with 3 holes for the torque arm bracket and balance weight.

Lines on the input shaft determine ratios:

Saginaws had 4 different ratios, so it just depended upon the engine and rear gear ratio.
Saginaw 4-speed 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
Saginaw 4-speed – 1 Line 2.54 1.80 1.44 1.00
Saginaw 4-speed – 2 Lines 3.11 2.20 1.47 1.00
Saginaw 4-speed – 3 Lines 3.50 2.47 1.65 1.00
Saginaw 4-speed – No lines 2.84 2.01 1.35 1.00

HBody 4 or 6 cylinder ones had 2 or 3 lines.
